Buffalo, NY – January 30, 2013: Because it’s so difficult to lose weight and keep it off – researchers have found that the majority of dieters regain lost pounds within three years – performance consultant Donna Hartney, Ph.D. and an “aha” moment expert, has created a free, downloadable weight-loss readiness quiz. “Lose Weight — A First-Things-First Quiz” is a quick assessment that helps pinpoint weight-loss trouble spots and offers tips for navigating around them.

“It’s a challenge to achieve a healthy weight and then to maintain it, but there are things you can do to greatly increase your chances of success,” says Hartney, author of The AHA! Handbook: How to spark the insights that will transform your life and career, the first research-based self-help book to teach readers how to spark pivotal “aha” moments.

Check your readiness to lose weight with the quiz from Donna Hartney, author of "aha" moment self-help bookThe quiz, available at http://www.donna-hartney.com/?p=1135, focuses on two key predictors of success:

  1. The experience of a pivotal weight-loss “aha” moment. Jeanette Keith, a Buffalo, N.Y.-based gastroenterologist, believes in the importance of moments of clarity when it comes to weight loss. In a 2011 interview with The Buffalo News, Dr. Keith said, “Every individual who I’ve talked to has had a different ‘aha moment.’ But what is similar is the inner motivation that allows them to stick with their program. Your friends and family may want it for you, but until you own it, the change just won’t happen.”
  2. Attention to the fundamentals of successful weight-loss.  Losing weight and keeping it off can be a daunting task, one that will require considerable focus and effort. Actively investigating weight-loss options, taking personality and lifestyle factors into consideration, specifying clear weight-loss goals, and putting together a step-by-step plan are all cornerstones of success.

Hartney spent more than 10 years researching what can trigger pivotal insights, moments of clarity that have significant and lasting impact on a person’s life and career. Through her research she found, contrary to conventional wisdom, that people can prime themselves for pivotal “aha” moments and has isolated the steps to do so. These are steps a person can take to spark moments of clarity that will help them lose weight and keep it off.

The AHA! Handbook: How to spark the insights that will transform your life and career offers strategies for sparking those pivotal realizations known as “aha” moments that can help people gain the focus and motivation they need to achieve the goals that are important to them. Buffalo, NY – January 29, 2013: Because it’s so difficult to break a nicotine addiction – a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analysis found that only six percent of smokers are successful at quitting – performance consultant Donna Hartney, Ph.D. and “aha” moment expert, has created a free, downloadable smoking cessation readiness quiz. “Kick the Smoking Habit – A Quiz to Test Your Readiness” is a three-question assessment that helps pinpoint resolution trouble spots and offers tips for navigating around them.

“It’s a challenge to quit smoking once and for all, but there are things you can do to greatly increase your chances of success,” says Hartney, author of The AHA! Handbook: How to spark the insights that will transform your life and career, the first research-based self-help book to teach readers how to spark pivotal “aha” moments.

The quiz, available at http://www.donna-hartney.com/?p=1122, focuses on three frequent trouble spots:

1.    Choose the right time to stop smoking. Anytime is not necessarily the best time to try to kick the habit. Trying to quit before the time is right can be difficult if not impossible. A person’s motivation to stop smoking and the realities of one’s current situation are key factors to consider.

2.    Take care of the basics that can make the difference between success and failure.  Kicking the habit won’t likely be easy. (Researchers have found that nicotine has an addictive power that rivals heroin, cocaine, and alcohol.) Quitting will require focus and effort. Considerable planning and follow-through are cornerstones for success.

3.    Recognize when a change of perspective is required. Difficult goals, like giving up cigarettes, usually require a new way of seeing things. An “aha” moment can make all the difference between success and failure. In a moment of clarity, the reasons to break the habit can become crystal clear and make it easy to follow through on the commitment to quit.

Through her research she found, contrary to conventional wisdom, that people can prime themselves for pivotal “aha” moments and has isolated the steps to do so. These are steps a smoker can use to spark realizations that will help them kick the habit permanently.

Can an AHA! Help You Beat a Cigarette Addiction? You Bet!

As I’ve been working on a press release on the power of AHA!s to break a nicotine addiction, I remember my mom’s struggle to stop smoking. She started smoking as a teenager. Over the next 40 plus years she tried many time to put down her cigarettes but always went back to them. Then at age 60, she decided to quit smoking—cold turkey, and never looked back. Five years later I asked her about her decision. To which she said, “I decided to do it. I did it. It was easy.”

Researchers have found that nicotine is powerfully addictive. How do people suddenly overcome a nicotine addiction in order to stop smoking? An AHA! can make all the difference. Check out this Mutual of Omaha aha moment video in which Christian of sunny Albuquerque, New Mexico, describes why he began to smoke, the moment of clarity that convinced him to stop smoking, and the power impact that AHA! had on his health and well-being.

What triggered Christian’s AHA!? Seeing himself clearly.

Researcher Finds the Secret to Successful Dieting: An AHA!

Recently I’ve blogged about the role of AHA!s in weight loss. If you’d like to read more, check out this Consumer News article by Karen Jaffe, Ph.D., at ConsumerReports.org.

According to Karen, “One thing I learned from my long years of research is that the best time to start a diet is when it feels right for you. That was a common theme among all of the successful dieters I interviewed for my dissertation. The dieting attempts that came after an “aha” moment were their most successful: they lost the most weight and kept it off the longest.”

"aha" moments are key when it comes to weight loss

Jordin Sparks describes her “AHA!”

Buffalo, NY – January 3, 2013 – Because New Year’s resolutions are so hard to keep – one study found that more than three quarters of them are abandoned before they are achieved – performance consultant Donna Hartney, Ph.D., has created a free, downloadable resolution-readiness quiz. The three-question quiz and companion assessment help pinpoint resolution trouble spots and offer tips for navigating around them.

“It’s a challenge to follow through on New Year’s resolutions, but there are things you can do to greatly increase your chances of success,” says Hartney, author of The AHA! Handbook: How to spark the insights that will transform your life and career.

This free, downloadable quiz tests a person's readiness to keep New Year's resolutions. The quiz, available at http://www.donna-hartney.com/?p=1049, focuses on three frequent trouble spots:

  1. Selecting the right resolution at the right time. There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all resolution.  A resolution that is a keeper links closely to life goals and situational realities.
  2. Taking care of the basics. Resolutions require focus and effort. Considerable planning and follow through are cornerstones for success.
  3. Recognizing when a change of perspective is required. The most difficult of resolutions usually require a new way of seeing things. An “Aha!” can make all the difference between success and failure.

“I, like many others, would make a New Year’s resolution with full intent to ‘start’ doing this or ‘quit’ doing that…only to find myself frustrated and defeated when I didn’t follow through,” wrote Sue Nientimp in a blog post on the Erie County, Pennsylvania, Department of Health website. Then Nientimp experienced an “Aha!” that made all the difference for her when it came to exercise. “For me, I felt an overwhelming sense of readiness and determination to make a change and follow through. I think I had an Aha-moment, or my own personal wake-up call. I finally made the decision to start exercising and to not quit.”

The AHA! Handbook: How to spark the insights that will transform your life and career, offers strategies for sparking those pivotal realizations known as “aha” moments that can help people create and keep meaningful resolutions. Learn more at http://www.DonnaHartney.com.
